Hot Wheels Cake

My youngest turned 4 this month, and he chose a Hot Wheels birthday theme. Since the party was at a local tumbling place, there wasn’t much for me to do for this party, so I decided to go all out with the cake. Here’s what I came up with…

I’m pretty excited about the outcome. The bottom tier is a dummy Styrofoam round, that I covered with fondant. For the flames, I made two templates, then cut them out of fondant. I painted a red outline on all the yellow flames using vodka and red gel food color. The cake board is trimmed with checkered duct tape. Which also is very handy for decorating water bottles!! Check them out!

And the duct tape came in handy for my favors too. These are just plastic cups that I filled with candy, then placed a cupcake on top. Each cupcake is topped with a hot wheel. I tied a fork to each one so the kids could eat them right out of the cup…hopefully less mess!

The birthday boy loved his cake, and the party was a success (and SOOOO easy since it wasn’t at my house!!)

A Mighty Cake

My good friends, Jen and Chris, have a son who is obsessed with Mighty Machines, but mostly all things construction. He calls his “worker guys” on the phone, and is always digging in the mud with his tractors. So, for his birthday, Jen asked me to create a construction cake. She provided the tractors, and here is what I came up with!

The cake is vanilla with strawberry filling (birthday boy HATES chocolate…is that even possible?!?!).  The cone is Styrofoam covered in fondant.

All the rocks were chocolate, purchased in the bulk foods at Winco. I attached them (and all the tractors) with melted chocolate. The cake was a HUGE hit with the kids!!
