Hot Wheels Cake

My youngest turned 4 this month, and he chose a Hot Wheels birthday theme. Since the party was at a local tumbling place, there wasn’t much for me to do for this party, so I decided to go all out with the cake. Here’s what I came up with…

I’m pretty excited about the outcome. The bottom tier is a dummy Styrofoam round, that I covered with fondant. For the flames, I made two templates, then cut them out of fondant. I painted a red outline on all the yellow flames using vodka and red gel food color. The cake board is trimmed with checkered duct tape. Which also is very handy for decorating water bottles!! Check them out!

And the duct tape came in handy for my favors too. These are just plastic cups that I filled with candy, then placed a cupcake on top. Each cupcake is topped with a hot wheel. I tied a fork to each one so the kids could eat them right out of the cup…hopefully less mess!

The birthday boy loved his cake, and the party was a success (and SOOOO easy since it wasn’t at my house!!)

Angry Angry Birds

Ok, so I know it’s just angry birds, and not angry angry birds, but it’s what my boys call it. I think it’s like hungry hungry hippo. Anyway, my youngest is celebrating his 4th birthday at school today, and he picked out some angry birds cake balls. I think he liked that there were 6 different characters. I should have made him pick one, but no, I made them all. They were a ton of work! Here’s the crew!

I wasn’t too impressed with how black bird came out, so I left him off the cupcakes.

Happy Valentine’s Day!

My valentines are DONE. This year, much like the last, was all about the cake pop…and cake ball. I’m sure you’ve seen this idea all over pinterest (with lollipops, not cake pops), but I LOVE it, and had to try it with my boys. Not the best picture, but you get the idea. I uploaded my picture to shutterfly, and they had some cute valentines day borders.

I also made some cake balls, but not just any cake balls, these ones I shaped into hearts. I love how they came out.

This one looks like a box of chocolates!

Tomorrow I plan to celebrate valentines with all my boys. We are having heart pizza and broken arrow cupcakes…I’ll post later:) I put out a little valentines treat for my boys to discover tomorrow…

I picked these cute little mailboxes up at the Target dollar section. What’s inside? Silly putty,a hotwheels car, a mini slinky, a mini strawberry pot, and some jelly beans.

Hope you have a great Valentine’s Day!!

It’s Been a Warm Winter!

Its been pretty toasty here in California (though that has changed recently!), but I saw these cookies at Truly Custom Cakery, and had to give these a go! Mine are not NEARLY as cute as Stacy’s, but they were super fun to make!! I didn’t follow her recipe exactly. I wanted to make a super soft sugar cookie…think grocery store. I know I know, they look gross… but have you tasted these?!?! Amazing. So, I made some, using a recipe I found here and covered them in vanilla butter cream.  Yes…they are good!! And pretty cute too!

A Mighty Cake

My good friends, Jen and Chris, have a son who is obsessed with Mighty Machines, but mostly all things construction. He calls his “worker guys” on the phone, and is always digging in the mud with his tractors. So, for his birthday, Jen asked me to create a construction cake. She provided the tractors, and here is what I came up with!

The cake is vanilla with strawberry filling (birthday boy HATES chocolate…is that even possible?!?!).  The cone is Styrofoam covered in fondant.

All the rocks were chocolate, purchased in the bulk foods at Winco. I attached them (and all the tractors) with melted chocolate. The cake was a HUGE hit with the kids!!
